From this morning's MarketWatch:

In a major strategy shift, Walt Disney says it will stop making lucrative direct to DVD sequels of such as classic animated films as "Cinderella". The move reflects the growing influence of its merger with Pixar, whose executives call the films embarrassing. Disney's division will now only produce original DVD films.

Wow.

I find that shocking. I can't believe that Disney is going to leave that money on the table.

The Pixar guy has a major point, though -- those films are pretty embarassing for the Disney brand. I mean, take a look at the list of movies that they based off of singular Disney smashes:

The Return of Jafar (1994)
Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996)
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997)
Belle's Magical World (1998)
Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998)
The Lion King: The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998)
The Little Mermaid: The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000)
Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure (2001)
Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002)
101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure (2003)
The Lion King 1½ (2004)
Mulan II (2005)
Tarzan II (2005)
Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005)
Kronk's New Groove (2005)
Bambi II (2006)
Brother Bear 2 (2006)
The Fox and the Hound 2 (2006)
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007)
The Little Mermaid III (2008)

It's totally a profit motive... ESPECIALLY the ones that are a) made from classic Disney movies, as opposed to those post Little Mermaid, and b) from historical stories (I mean, come on, Pocahontas II?)

Out of all of those, I think the only ones I enjoyed at all were the Aladdin sequels. And, sadly enough, I've seen all of those except for the last 6 or so.

I don't think it's clear that it made Disney more money. Look at how much each Pixar movie grossed lately as opposed to the recent Disney movies. It felt like less of an event when each Disney movie came out -- maybe because of all the crappy DTV sequels. Sometimes less is more.

I so wanted to link to a Saturday TV Funhouse (from SNL) where they make fun of all the sequels but it's not on youtube. :(

Disney has had a lot more misses than hits in the direct-to-video movie sequels, so I'm surprised it took them this long to finally give that up.

Oddly enough, the Japanese have had more luck creating direct-to-video OVAs (Original Video Animation) with various Japanese series.

I'm so glad the Pixar guys are giving Disney the swift kick in the balls they needed.

I remember reading that the first thing the Pixar folks did was reinstate the hand-drawn animation studios at Disney, because for some idiotic reason, they had decided to shut them down in favour of the computer animated studios. Very glad Pixar nixed that stupid mistake.

How does that affect my preordered copy of 112 Dalmations: yet Another Freakin' Dog?

I never understood why they wasted their time on those things, anyway. I tend to avoid the "fake" sequels anyhow!
